Dutch glory in the land down under

Dutch glory in the land down under

CEO Foreword

Dear <<First Name>>,

Following the Brexit referendum in 2016, the Netherlands has seen a more than five-fold increase in British investments. This number is still growing as a result of the ongoing Brexit uncertainty. So far, the Netherlands is particularly attractive for companies in the financial sector, IT, the pharmaceutical industry, media and advertising. Meanwhile, however, also more and more British manufacturing companies seem to orientate themselves on an establishment across the North Sea. You can read more about this in our recurring feature “The world around us”.

As we informed you earlier, Oldenburger|Fritom is the proud logistics partner of Top Dutch Solar Racing. Sunday the team from the Northern Netherlands made its debut at the start of the World Solar Challenge in Australia. This prestigious solar-powered car race event is all about self-built solar cars and sustainable innovations. In this newsletter, you will find out all there is to know about this world-famous competition with many Dutch winners.

Just as the Top Dutch Solar Racing team, Oldenburger|Fritom has also focused on sustainable innovations during the past year. The result of these efforts was officially opened on 20 September, 2019: our new distribution center for which we obtained the BREEAM Outstanding certificate. You can read about our final score of 97.3 percent with which we have achieved a first in the Netherlands.

Finally, Oldenburger|Fritom and the professional football club FC Emmen have a shared goal of making a structural contribution to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This is why we have become partners. As part of this partnership, we are both active in the guidance of people that are distanced from the labor market. We would therefore like to introduce you to our new colleague Melle Vleer in this newsletter.

I wish you much reading pleasure.

Sincerely,
René Dale

Dutch glory in the land down under
The idea for the now world-famous World Solar Challenge originates from the Danish adventurer Hans Tholstrup. Together with former Formula 1 driver Larry Perkins and his brother Garry, Tholstrup built one of the very first solar cars. In 1982 they participated in the BP Solar Trek in Australia in the ‘Quiet Achiever’ – the name they gave their solar car. The 4052 km route between Perth and Sydney was covered in 20 days at an average speed of 23 kilometer per hour.

North-South route
This successful performance led to the 1st edition of the World Solar Challenge in 1987. The route, however, was changed. During the BP Solar Trek, Tholstrup and Perkins traversed Australia from west to east. The World Solar Challenge traverses the continent from north to south. The reason for this change was that the sunlight comes in from both sides of the solar car in case of a North-South route. This is why the competition runs also this year from Darwin in the north to Adelaide in the south. A distance of 3021 km straight through the Australian outback.

Dutch successes so far
The Vattenfall Solar Team from the TU Delft has been participating in the World Solar Challenge since 2001. With the Nuna solar cars, this team has so far won 7 world titles in the Challenger class. The Solar Team Twente is also represented in this class and structurally participates to reach the podium.

The Solar Team from the TU Eindhoven joined the Dutch participants in 2013. With their Stella solar cars, however, they do not participate in the Challenger class but in the Cruiser class. Solar-powered family cars are central in this class. Since their first participation, the Solar Team Eindhoven has always managed to win the race in the Cruiser class.

Green Lightning
Thanks to sustainable innovations, the average speed has slowly increased throughout the history of the World Solar Challenge. The average speed was 66.9 kilometer per hour during the 1st edition in 1987 and reached a peak in 2005 of 102.8 kilometer per hour. The Top Dutch Solar Racing team from the Northern Netherlands participates for the first time in the World Solar Challenge in the Challenger class. The team has named their self-built solar car Green Lightning.

As a logistics partner, Oldenburger|Fritom took care of the complete transport operation of this sustainable solar car to Australia two months ago. After Green Lightning arrived in Australia, the Top Dutch Solar Racing team started an intensive training program and all conceivable precautions were taken. In short, the Top Dutch Solar Racing team appeared well prepared at the start sunday. Oldenburger|Fritom wishes the team every success this week.

The 15th edition of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is taking place this week, from 13 to 20 October 2019.

In the top of most sustainable distribution centers
The official opening of our new distribution center in Veendam took place on 20 September, 2019. The guests were treated to a spectacular opening act by voice artist Niek Boes and a fascinating lecture by guest speaker Walther Ploos van Amstel. Oldenburger|Fritom itself received the BREEAM certificate this afternoon, with a score of 97.3 percent.

Unique score in the Netherlands
To obtain the highest attainable BREEAM rating level – Outstanding – a minimum overall percentage score of 85 percent must be achieved. With a percentage score of 97.3 percent, Oldenburger|Fritom is the first company in the Netherlands to achieve the highest sustainability score according to the latest and strictest assessment standard (2014). As a result, we are in the top of most sustainable distribution centers, not only in the Netherlands but also worldwide.

Fully automatic logistic solutions
Necessary preparations were made in our new distribution center to offer fully automatic logistic solutions in the future. Initially we will conduct our warehousing activities in a semi-automatic way. We rely on the expertise of Peinemann Equipment in Veendam for this. At the same time, also our existing distribution center in Veendam has been renovated according to the BREEAM Excellent standard. This distribution center provides room for high-tech products, e-fulfillment activities and the design of turnkey cleanrooms.

Oldenburger|Fritom made a suggestion for a donation to invited guests who wanted to give a present in honor of the official opening. No less than € 2085 was donated to the ‘Jarige Job’ foundation. Our heartfelt thanks go to all who have donated.

British companies choose the Netherlands

Although there is not yet a Brexodus, many British companies are investing abroad as a result of the Brexit. The Netherlands is often a popular choice among these companies. So far, especially companies in the financial sector, IT, the pharmaceutical industry, media and advertising have opted for a branch across the North Sea. Examples include: the international media company Discovery and the Japanese Norinchukin Bank.

In the meantime, also more and more British manufacturing companies seem to orientate themselves on an establishment in the Netherlands. The same goes for American manufacturing companies that for now still have access to the European market via the United Kingdom. Actions are also taken in the area of logistics. For example, the aim is to realize a ferry route between the Scottish town of Rosyth and the Eemshaven in the Netherlands.

The Dutch statistics agency CBS has calculated that British companies have invested almost six times as much in the Netherlands after the Brexit referendum. From 14 billion euros in 2016 to 80 billion euros in 2018. As a result, the United Kingdom is now the biggest foreign investor in the Netherlands.

Cheerfully coming home again
The professional football club FC Emmen wants to make a structural contribution to corporate social responsibility (CSR) within the region. The guidance of people that are distanced from the labor market is part of this. FC Emmen does this by joining forces with their partners such as Oldenburger|Fritom. Thanks to this partnership, we were able to welcome a new colleague last July: Melle Vleer.

Frustrating…
Melle is 63 years old and before he joined our team, he found it difficult to find a job. This was frustrating because Melle very much wanted to work. Preferably as a warehouse employee. The fact that he didn’t succeed in this did not only cause him frustration. His wife also saw him coming home less and less cheerful. For a long time, they had little hope for the future, until Melle came into contact with FC Emmen.

Teamwork
At FC Emmen it is not only about teamwork on the football field. This is also the case within the football club itself. Everyone who is involved with FC Emmen is also involved with corporate social responsibility (CSR). Jan Korte, for example, is not only Technical Football Manager at FC Emmen but also the job coach of Melle. In addition, Jan works for USG Restart. In this position he also guides people looking for a job.

Working alongside colleagues
In the meantime, Melle mainly works at our location in Emmen. His activities include loading, checking and repackaging of products. He has also acquired new skills, including how to operate our system and scanners. According to himself, Melle very much likes working alongside colleagues again. He emphasizes the good atmosphere at Oldenburger|Fritom and that also has not gone unnoticed by his wife. For the first time since a long while, Melle is cheerfully coming home again.
