The final BREEAM scores for our new distribution center and the upgrade of our existing warehouse and headquarters were recently announced. Oldenburger|Fritom is proud to announce that these buildings in Veendam have also achieved an exceptionally high BREEAM Outstanding score.
BREEAM is the world's most widely used method for assessing the sustainability of buildings, and Outstanding is the highest achievable level. In Europe, the Netherlands, along with countries such as Germany, Sweden, Norway, and Spain, has adapted the BREEAM methodology to national laws and regulations. The BREEAM-NL methodology is managed by the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC), of which Oldenburger|Fritom has been a partner since 2025.
2019 | New Construction 2014 v2-scheme
Guided by our motto "Shaping the Future of Logistics”, Oldenburger|Fritom has had all its buildings certified according to BREEAM Outstanding. This began in 2018, when we commissioned the construction of a new distribution center across from our headquarters and existing warehouse in Veendam, certified according to BREEAM Outstanding. Remco Ruimtebouw, now Hercuton, completed the construction within a year, in accordance with the BREEAM-NL New Construction 2014 v2-scheme.
In 2019, our first BREEAM Outstanding distribution center officially opened with a score of no less than 97.27 percent. At the time, we were the first logistics service provider in the Northern Netherlands to achieve such a high BREEAM Outstanding rating.
2025 | New Construction 2020 v1-scheme
Due to increasing demand for our innovative logistic solutions, we commissioned the construction of a second BREEAM Outstanding distribution center in 2024, in addition to our 2019 distribution center. This time, Bouwgroep Noord from the Dutch city of Drachten and Hardeman from Veenendaal were responsible for the construction, in accordance with a more stringent scheme: BREEAM-NL New Construction 2020 v1.
The requirements in this scheme are much stricter than those of the 2014-scheme. For example, the 2020 scheme expanded the number of theme areas and the scope. We are therefore pleased that our second BREEAM Outstanding distribution center achieved a final score of 93.18 percent in 2025. With this score, this distribution center now tops the list of the Netherlands’ highest-scoring logistics buildings according to the New Construction 2020 v1-scheme.
2025 | In-Use v6.0.0-scheme
The final In-Use score of Oldenburger|Fritom's existing warehouse and headquarters in Veendam, which were built in the late 1980s, is also very high. Starting in 2024, Oldenburger|Fritom upgraded both buildings from BREEAM In-Use Excellent to Outstanding. It was previously announced that the warehouse is now the only existing logistics building in the Netherlands with In-Use Outstanding certification.
With an exceptional Outstanding score of 90.06 percent, the warehouse and head office are among the absolute world leaders in sustainable buildings.
Thank you
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Fritom Group. Without the support of our parent company, we would not have been able to achieve these flagship sustainability projects. Together, we have put Fritom's focus on innovative sustainability firmly on the map.
We would also like to thank Remco Ruimtebouw, now Hercuton, and all the subcontractors and consultants responsible for the construction of our first BREEAM Outstanding distribution center in 2018/19.
We would also like to thank Bouwgroep Noord, Hardeman, and all the subcontractors who dedicated themselves to our second BREEAM Outstanding distribution center. The same goes for all our partners, including consultants, who contributed to the upgrade of our existing warehouse and headquarters in 2024/25.
